Old Jail, RoscommonConstructed
in 1777, the Old Jail formerly Tudor House Roscommon, was acquired in 1996 by a
developer and under the Urban Renewal Scheme, a proposal was carefully packaged.
OCA was appointed to advise on the reconstruction and on historical and
refurbishment prospects for the entire development.
The former building originally consisted of 36 Cells and the Governor’s
Private Dwelling. Unfortunately,
the owner in 1983, despite the protests by OCA, demolished the Cells and left
only the façade and the Governor’s Residence, along with the main perimeter
wall and some artefacts. In
1998 reconstruction got underway and in February 2000 Phase 1 of the Project was
completed. The
facade has been restored by the client, but not always in keeping with the OCA
recommendations, but nevertheless a new use has now been created for this
interesting building which dominates Roscommon town. The
building has been converted into a Heritage and Commercial Complex of shopping
units and an extensive up-market Restaurant and Apartments, all overlooking the
Main Street of Roscommon.
Space is being provided within the Complex to Roscommon Historical +
Archaelogical Society for a permanent, but variable exhibition in the centre of
the Commercial Complex. Promoter : M + M Construction Company Limited Old
