Roscommon Castle

Roscommon Castle was built in the late 13th Century.  Brian F O’Carroll of OCA undertook a comprehensive Topographical Survey of the Castle in 1981.  Historical research was then carried out over a period of time in Ireland and the UK.  The Castle is owned by the current Earl of Essex and plans are being prepared to Market the Castle and its surrounds as a major Tourist destination. Discussions on its restoration in part, are underway with Duchas, for the restoration of one of the six great Towers.  This work will be done under the aegis of Duchas.   A special Trust has been established for the purpose of promoting general interest in Roscommon Castle and surrounds.

The Trust received the Gulbankian Environment Award for 1998 and work now continues on the promotion and flood-lighting of the entire edifice.  This programme will be launched by the year 2001.

Brian F O’Carroll is Chairman of the Roscommon Trust undertaking this extensive.
